May 20, 2015BREVARD, N.C – ( May 18, 2015 ) – Comporium will complete a new WiFi wireless access system for Main Street in Brevard in time for the White Squirrel Festival May 22-24.
This free service will serve Main Street from City Hall to Comporium’s business office with nine wireless access points and one additional unit on Broad Street.
“Thanks to the local building owners who allowed the equipment attachment, there is seamless coverage providing high-speed Internet access to anyone with a smartphone or wireless capabilities on iPads, tablets and laptops,” said Frank Porter, Comporium’s general manager. “This was truly a community effort.”
Access units are on these buildings: City Hall, Brevard Barber shop, Al Platt’s building on the Times Arcade Alley, McMinn Building (White Squirrel Shop), Michael Domokur Architects’ new office in the Aethelwold Hotel and also at 36 Main Street, Hooper Nationwide Insurance, the Hollingsworth Building, Comporium on Main Street and Comporium at the Farmers Market.
Comporium will promote Transylvania County and the City of Brevard on the landing page for the service. In addition, real-time information can be distributed to a large number of people at once. Traffic information, event schedules, lost child and other information could be blasted to the landing page in real-time.
“This is another of several efforts by Comporium to make Transylvania County a wonderful place for residents and a great destination for visitors, investors and future residents,” Porter explained. “These include a two-year, $5 million upgrade of the cable TV system to support cable modems up to 300 Mbps speeds and the introduction of fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) planned for Transylvania County.
“Already, Comporium has increased county-wide capacity from 200 Mbps in 2009 to 10 Gbps today. That is a 5,000 percent increase,” Porter added. “Service reliability has been improved by creating duplicate transmission routes. A new 10 Gbps circuit will be added on July 1 in order to meet the demand for bandwidth growth. We will continue to announce progress as these milestones are achieved.”
