August 24, 2020Comporium is Clearing Space for Future Use Next to Fountain Park
ROCK HILL, S.C. – July 5, 2020 – Rock Hill’s Old Town neighborhood will soon have two fewer buildings, more green space, and future opportunity for growth. Comporium has begun the process of leveling two buildings on Main Street across from Fountain Park. Local construction company, Ecclesia, will demolish the buildings located at 245 and 249 East Main Street beginning this week.
245 East Main most recently housed Comporium’s Security and Long Distance workgroups. 249 East Main once housed Comporium’s Cable TV workgroup, then known as Catawba Services. The building was last used by the Arts Council as a performing arts center. Both buildings have been vacant for several years since Comporium’s workgroups relocated to the company’s buildings at TechPark and the nearby downtown customer service center.
“We’ve been planning the demolition of these two buildings for a while as the next steps in moving forward with our plans to redevelop the area around Fountain Park,” stated Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Matthew Dosch. “Even with the questions created by the pandemic and its impact, the timing is right to take these two unused buildings down. With Rock Hill completing the Indoor Sports Center, momentum on the Panthers’ move to town, and University Center’s continued progress, we’re making way for redevelopment on the east side of downtown.”
The newly cleared area will temporarily serve as an urban green space. It will also provide additional parking near Fountain Park that can be utilized during future Food Truck Fridays and community festivities. Comporium is working to continue the Old Town redevelopment it began with the construction of Fountain Park Place in 2014.
