April 8, 2015ROCK HILL, S.C. – ( March 23, 2015 ) – Comporium Senior Vice President Greg Austin will appear in front of the City Council members tonight to inform them that checks totaling $300,000 toward the Textile Corridor’s infrastructure improvements were submitted to the City of Rock Hill earlier in the day.
The City considers the development to be part of its larger plan to develop “Knowledge Park,” which encompasses Fountain Park through Downtown to Winthrop University.
Telecommunication companies like Comporium can earn an infrastructure tax credit by investing in public economic development projects instead of paying certain licensing taxes to the S.C. Department of Revenue. Because the infrastructure tax credit simply defers taxes that Comporium would have paid directly to the state, it has no effect on its customers’ rates.
Austin, who is in charge of Comporium’s business services and sales, was accompanied by Douglas Lundell, a senior vice president with Comporium who coordinated the infrastructure tax credit process.
“We are extremely pleased to be in the position to use the state’s tax code to stimulate local economic development projects,” said Austin. “We believe in the potential benefits that Knowledge Park promises, to increase jobs and attract services that existing and future residents will enjoy.”
The City of Rock Hill has been upgrading water lines on Laurel Street, improving the road near the Bleachery area, and preparing for the eventual replacement of the City’s Laurelwood water tower near downtown. The City has budgeted over $8 million for the water system and roadway upgrades to support development throughout Knowledge Park.
