June 18, 2015BREVARD, N.C – ( June 18, 2015 ) – Comporium has started a $5.6 million, two-year project to upgrade the cable TV system for most of Transylvania County,” said Frank Porter, Comporium’s general manager. “This upgrade to 18,000 addresses will expand service options to include high-speed Internet on cable modems, video on demand and other two-way options like pay-for-view events. Also, we recently announced the new WiFi wireless access system for Main Street in Brevard. This free service will serve Main Street from City Hall to Comporium’s business office with nine wireless access points and one additional unit on Broad Street.”
Comporium’s High Speed Internet is currently based on DSL, a copper based system. The new cable modem system is capable of much greater speeds. Increased speeds will be immediately available and even higher speeds will be possible in the future.
The upgrade started with the Brevard Music Center area and is moving to Pisgah Forest. Current construction is in the Strause Park, Hospital and Wal-Mart/Holiday Inn areas. This project will take nearly two years, ending in December 2016. Scheduling is determined by network needs. Areas that have been upgraded will receive telephone calls, email and postcards requesting appointments for the new cable modem installation. In some cases, additional wiring will be required; but there will be no cost to the customer.
Cable modem replacements will be mandatory as the old DSL system will be terminated in areas with the new cable modem availability. In all, over 8,000 modems will be replaced.
“Areas scheduled for upgrade will experience several interruptions to cable TV programming,” Porter explained. “Comporium will inform customers of the pending interruptions caused by the construction. In ALL cases, cable TV will be restored at the end of the workday and no major interruptions are expected on weekends.”
