“This School’s Got STEM” Competition
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Eight talented classrooms from across South Carolina have been named finalists in Comporium’s “This School’s Got STEM” competition, organized by SC Future Minds with the support of the SC2TEM Centers SC.
The finalists now have a chance of winning the $500 first prize and attending one of the state’s premier festivals supporting science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
Voting is underway until midnight on Sunday, March 20 at www.scfutureminds.org and the South Carolina Future Minds Facebook page.
Finalists were chosen with help from dozens of scientists across the state from such organizations as Michelin, Comporium, Honda and the SC Department of Commerce.
The finalists, listed alphabetically, are:
Academy for the Arts, Science and Technology in the Horry County School District, which produced a video showing how STEM is infused throughout the school curriculum.
Cowpens Middle School in Spartanburg School District 3, where students created a “doodle bot” to help an acquaintance who was unable to draw.
Curry Labs of Manning High School in Clarendon School District 2, which had students construct model homes with electricity in a project to aid flood victims.
Daniel High School of Pickens County School District, which performed chemical and biological testing on water from the Issaqueena Forest.
Mount Lebanon Elementary School in Anderson School District Four, which produced a video showing STEM activities at the school.
Saluda Trail Middle School of Rock Hill School District, which created a video featuring a stylized Mona Lisa and Leonardo da Vinci introducing STEM activities at the school.
Scranton Elementary School of Florence School District Three, which created a video showing the STEM activities at their school.
Sugar Creek Elementary School in the Fort Mill School District, which highlighted activities of its science-based clubs.
The competition is sponsored by communcations leader Comporium and South Carolina Future Minds, the non-profit organizing private support for public schools.
There was no fee to enter, and the contest was open to any public school student in South Carolina in kindergarten through 12th grade.
