Comporium.Net users can create their own Web pages and store them on our server. This provides a mechanism by which users can display their own information on the Web without the need for their own systems to be on-line all the time.

We offer a number of different services, ranging from simple storage and user-developed files to complete creation and implementation of users' pages (including scanning and other graphics services, page layout and development, etc.)

tbCreating Your Pages
Creating your pages - Learning HTML
The first step in creating a Web site is to learn the basics of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). A Web page is simply a plain text file (created in a text editor such as Notepad) with various HTML commands. HTML is an easy language to learn, and a good place to start is NCSA's Beginner's Guide to HTML.

If you don't have the time to learn HTML, you can use any of the popular WYSIWYG ("What You See Is What You Get") Web page creation programs such as Microsoft FrontPage* or Macromedia Dreamweaver. You can also create pages easily by creating them in Microsoft Word and then saving them by going to file-->save as web page. By using WYSIWYG software, you can create Web pages without learning HTML. However, WYSIWYG's are often limited in their functionality and are usually not as efficient as coding HTML "by hand." They are, however, extremely useful for novices.

Important:
Your main entry page (first page of your site) MUST be named "index.html". This must be the name of your start page in order for your personal web site to work. If it is not named this, you pages will not be seen by the browser.

*FrontPage extensions are not supported when using your personal web space as of this time.

tbTesting Your Pages
No matter whether you code your HTML by hand or with WYSIWYG software, you will need to test your pages in a Web browser. From your Browser simply select File --> Open and select the page you created. If your page doesn't appear correctly in both Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox, you might want to make a few modifications. Also, you should make sure your images appear and your links work.

tbPublishing Your Pages
Publishing (Uploading) your site:
Once you're happy with your site, you can publish it to your personal comporium Web space. To upload your files to your new web page, you will need to use FTP software, such as: WS_FTP, SmartFTP, Filezilla, Fetch, etc.

Using FTP software, connect to ftp.comporium.net but not via an Anonymous login. Enter the Username and Password you are currently using for your own account. When FTP makes the connection to the server, you will be placed in your top-level folder. There will already be one or more sub folders shown on the Remote host side, such as WORKSPACE. One of these folders will be www. Change to that folder (most simply by double-clicking on the www folder name).

Important:
You will see a file called "index.html". This file will need to be deleted before your pages can be seen. Do this by clicking once on the file and then clicking the delete button on the remote/server side of your ftp program.

Once this is completed you can upload your pages by selecting them from Local (your computer) and clicking the arrow that points to the Remote side. (Remember that your main page must be named index.html. This must be the name of your start page in order for your personal web site to work.) Copy all relevant files from your system to your www folder. (This would include all of your HTML files, as well as any graphics or other files that are referenced within those HTML files.) Be sure to copy all HTML files in ASCII mode! You can now access these files across the Net using any WWW browser.

tbAccessing Your Webpage
Accessing your Personal Web Page:

The URL for your new Personal Web Site is:

http://web.comporium.net/~username

where username is your Internet Account Login Username.

Note: You can view any specific page of your web site by including its filename in the URL. For example, you may simply open the following URL: http://web.comporium.net/~username/filename
